500cc Formula 3 was a vibrant hotbed of British talent during the 1950s. Stars such as Stirling Moss and Peter Collins learned the tricks of the trade in those nimble machines.
Formula 3 star and Grand Prix driver
Although not in the same bracket as either of those future stars, Tommy Bridger was another to emerge from the category. He began in the series during 1953, first with a Cooper-JAP before switching to a Kieft-Norton for his second season. Steady rather than spectacular, he drove a new Cooper-Norton in 1956 and 1957 and enjoyed many a dice with three-time champion Jim Russell.
Bridger drove the British Racing Partnership's Formula 2 Cooper T45-Climax in 1958. He began the season by crashing out of the Glover Trophy at Goodwood but he was fifth at Brands Hatch and second at Crystal Palace that spring. His continental debut was at Reims when Bridger finished eighth in the Coupe de Vitesse.
As well as deciding the world championship, the Moroccan Grand Prix also included an F2 class in 1958. Bridger qualified third among his F2 piers but crashed heavily before half distance. He continued to race in British F3 for another two seasons before retiring at the end of 1960.
