This successful businessman was also a gentleman driver in GTs during the 1990s – a championship winner thanks in part to his professional co-drivers.

Business career and GT champion

A banker by profession, Thomas Bscher worked for Deutsche Bank and Brown Brothers before joining Sal Opperheim in 1986, trading in the markets and working in corporate finance. He left the Cologne-based organisation in 1995, just as his endurance racing career was taking off.

He drove in the Le Mans 24 Hours from 1994 to 2000 but it was in the newly fashionable FIA GT Championship that Bscher enjoyed his greatest successes. He shared a Dave Price Racing McLaren F1 GTR-BMW with John Nielsen in 1995 and they won both the Global and European GT titles. They were joined by Peter Kox for the 1996 Le Mans 24 Hours and finished fourth overall in a West-sponsored McLaren. Bscher remained with the team for another couple of years and won the 1998 European GT Championship with Geoff Lees.

Prototypes with an ex-works BMW

He then acquired an ex-works BMW V12 LM98 prototype for the following season and the DPR-run car finished the 1999 Le Mans 24 Hours fifth overall. Bscher withdrew from international racing after another season with the BMW but continues to dabble in historic racing.

Automobiles Bugatti

His professional and sporting careers converged in December 2003 when Bscher joined the Volkswagen Group as President of Automobiles Bugatti. Responsible for introducing the spectacular Veyron supercar, he eventually resigned in 2007 when apparently frustrated by the main board’s decision not to introduce a second model to Bugatti’s range.
