Biography

Silvio Moser started racing a Jaguar XK120 during the early 1960s before soon switching to Formula Junior. He dominated the 1964 Temporada (run for a mix of FJ and Formula 2) with his Brabham BT6-Ford unbeaten in the four-race series. He ran his own Brabham in F2 and Formula 3 for the next couple of seasons and entered the 1966 German Grand Prix but his Brabham BT16-Cosworth did not start after engine problems.

Formula 1 privateer

The small Swiss driver made his full world championship debut in the 1967 British GP when he retired Charles Vögele’s Cooper T77-ATS. Vögele bought Guy Ligier’s Brabham BT20-Repco for the following Formula 1 season with which Moser entered five GPs. He failed to qualify three times but he was fifth in the 1968 Dutch GP, albeit three laps off the pace. He also drove Vögele’s new Tecno in F2 that year and was fourth at Zandvoort.

The Brabham BT24-Ford that Piers Courage had just raced in the Tasman series was acquired for 1969 as Moser again made up the numbers in F1. He started the United States GP from the back of the grid and finished sixth to score his only point of the year.

Moser commissioned Vittorio Bellasi to build a new F1 car for 1970 but the Bellasi F170-Ford proved a disaster. He only qualified once in five attempts and retired from the Austrian GP when he did start. Moser returned for the 1971 Italian GP and Moser again failed to finish from what was his final GP.

Racing career after Formula 1

Apart from that one-off, Moser raced in F2 from 1971 when an early driver to be sponsored by Marlboro. His Brabham BT30-Cosworth won its heat at Crystal Palace from a surprise pole position. He switched to a BT36 and finished sixth in Vallelunga’s final F2 round. Further success in the category was confined to non-championship races however. Fourth at Hockenheim in 1971 and at the Nürburgring in 1972, Moser’s Brabham BT38-Ford finished second in that latter year’s Monza Lotteria.

His Lola T290-Ford was fifth in the 1973 Targa Florio and Moser planned to race in F1 again in 1974. However, just days before that Spanish GP return with a private Brabham BT42-Ford, he crashed during the 1974 Monza 1000Kms when exiting the Ascari chicane. He suffered severe head and internal injuries and was transferred to a clinic in his homeland. Operated on several times, Moser never regained consciousness and died a month later.
