Best known as Honda’s original Champ Car test driver, Parker Johnstone’s professional career path could have been so different. He toured Europe when 15 years old playing trumpet in the International Youth Orchestra and graduated from the University of California with an engineering degree. And he worked as a stunt driver on the Hollywood blockbuster Speed.

Sports car career

Johnstone also started racing while still at school and progressed to SCCA and IMSA-sanctioned events. Title success during the late-1980s included victory in IMSA’s 1987 and 1988 Sedan Championships driving Comptech Racing’s Acura.

He graduated to IMSA Lights in 1989 with the team and dominated the class from 1991 to 1993. Johnstone won over half the races he started during that time with Comptech’s Spice-Acuras and qualified on the class pole position for 31 of the 38 races entered.

Champ Car with Honda

So when Honda (Acura’s parent company) decided to build a Champ Car engine it chose Comptech and Johnstone as its development partners in 1994. He qualified on pole position for his oval debut in the 1995 Marlboro 500 at Michigan and led the early stages in impressive style before brake issues forced him to retire.

After two partial seasons, Johnstone’s first full Champ Car campaign with the team in 1996 included a career-best second-place finish at Long Beach as well as heavy accidents at Michigan and Elkhart Lake. He moved to Team Kool Green for 1997 (again Honda powered) and was fifth at Long Beach. He led several races that year but it proved to be his last season in Champ Cars.

Retired from racing, Johnstone has worked as an analyst on American television and is a qualified commercial pilot. He continues to be as competitive as ever in cycling and the triathlon.
