Marco Crosara and Giannino Marzotto were old school friends who twice won the Mille Miglia together. The role of co-driver on the Mille Miglia varied from some who drove while the star rested to navigators such as Denis Jenkinson in 1955. But as Marzotto later related, "there were no notes at all, if Crosara had notes, he would have lost them! He had no sense."
The 1950 race was run in driving rain and fog throughout. The works Marzotto/Crosara Ferrari 195S led when the cars reached Ravenna. Team-mates Alberto Ascari and Luigi Villoresi both retired so it was Marzotto who upheld Ferrari honour by winning by seven and a half minutes.
The weather for the 1953 Mille Miglia was a complete contrast. That they had a private Vignale-bodied Ferrari 340 MM for the race was thanks to Crosara who made a personal plea to Enzo Ferrari after plans to run an Alfa Romeo or Lancia fell through.
The Alfa Romeo team was the class of the field with Consalvo Sanesi, Karl Kling and then Juan Manuel Fangio all leading. But by Siena the Marzotto/Crosara Ferrari was up to second, two minutes behind the great Argentinean. Fangio’s Alfa Romeo 6C-3000CM then lost steering to one wheel on the Futa Pass. It is remarkable that he still completed the race albeit 12 minutes behind Marzotto and Crosara at the finish – the Italians winning at a new record speed. The old friends died in 2012 within five days of each other.
