Marc Gené spent two seasons as a Formula 1 driver before becoming a longstanding test driver for Williams and Ferrari. However, his greatest triumph to date has been in sports cars.

Early racing career

Like older brother Jordi, Marc Gené was Spanish Karting Champion in 1990 before embarking on his car racing career two years later in Formula Ford. Runner-up in the 1993 European FF1600 Championship and in the Formula Ford Festival established his reputation abroad.

British Formula 3 was next in 1994 although Gené struggled to develop Alan Docking’s HKS/Mitsubishi engine. He moved to the crack West Surrey Racing for his sophomore F3 campaign and showed glimpses of form only to finish a disappointing 11th in the standings.

He began 1997 with Pacific Racing in Formula 3000 and set the fastest race lap on his debut at Silverstone. However, an accident at Pau left him with a back injury and without a drive when he was fit once more. Another three races for Nordic were not a success so he stepped back to Spanish Formula Nissan in 1998. It was a dominant return to form as he won the title in style with six victories.

Formula 1 with Minardi and Williams

Even so his 1999 graduation to Minardi’s F1 team scarcely seemed warranted although he finished sixth in the chaotic European Grand Prix at the Nürburgring to score a rare point for the Italian minnows. A second season with the team yielded no better than eighth in Australia and Austria.

Rather than continue at the back of the field, Gené was Williams’s test driver from 2001 to 2004 and substituted for an injured Ralf Schumacher on three occasions during that time. Fifth position in the 2003 Italian GP was the best result of his F1 career.

Ferrari test driver and Peugeot sports car success

He moved to Ferrari as test driver in 2005 and combined that role with racing for Peugeot’s sports car team. Fourth in the 2007 Le Mans Series, he recovered from a heavy testing accident at Le Mans to finish as runner-up in both the 24-hour race and championship a year later. The diesel-powered Peugeot finally won the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2009 with Gené, David Brabham and Alex Wurz on the driving strength.

Further sports car success came at the start of 2010 at Sebring as Gené established himself as an impressive endurance racer. He won at Spa-Francorchamps and was fourth in the Le Mans 24 Hours when sharing a Peugeot 908 with Wurz and Anthony Davidson during 2011.

The French manufacturer withdrew at the end of the season leaving Gené without firm plans for 2012. However, he replaced the injured Timo Bernhard in Audi’s line-up for a couple of rounds of the new World Endurance Championship. Winner at Spa-Francorchamps with Romain Dumas and Loïc Duval, the trio also finished fifth at Le Mans. Third at both Spa and Le Mans on his two WEC appearances of 2013, he returned to the Circuit de la Sarthe a year later to finish second with Tom Kristensen and Lucas di Grassi in a 1-2 for Audi Sport Team Joest.
