Biography

The 1980 Formula 2 season had already been marred by the death of Markus Höttinger when friend and former team-mate Hans-Georg Bürger was killed just 13 weeks later. This personable German began racing in 1976 and was runner-up to Mauro Baldi in the European Renault Five Cup a year later.

Success in the BMW M1 Procar series

Formula 3 followed in 1978 with Bertram Schäfer’s Ralt RT1-Toyota when title success again proved elusive – beaten in the 1979 German F3 Championship by Michael Korten. Bürger also shared a GS Tuning BMW 320i with Höttinger in German sports cars that year but it was his debut in BMW M1 Procars that drew wider acclaim. Invited to drive a works car in the German Grand Prix support race, Bürger passed Didier Pironi to take an impressive third place against the established Formula 1 stars of the day.

Formula 2 with Tiga

He continued in Procars in 1980 with GS Tuning’s BASF-sponsored M1 and graduated to F2 with the unique Tiga F280-BMW. He finished eighth on his debut at Thruxton before impressing at the Nürburgring by qualifying second on the 14-mile Nordschleife. Bürger ran second before the Tiga’s gear linkage broke.

However, he crashed at Zandvoort’s 125mph Scheivlak corner during morning warm-up and a pole from the catch fencing struck his helmet. It split near in two and Bürger suffered severe head injuries. He died in an Amsterdam hospital two days later leaving a young widow and nine-month-old son.
