An eye injury forced Dr Helmut Marko to retire from racing in 1972 and he began working as a driver manager. One of his early charges was promising Austrian Hans Binder.

Early racing career

A graduate of German Formula Ford 1600, Binder raced Jörg Obermoser’s March 743-Ford in the 1974 Polifac German Formula 3 series and he won at Mainz-Finthen. He also made his Formula 2 debut at Hockenheim that year when 12th with Obermoser’s March 742-BMW.

A full-time F2 driver in 1975, Binder finished a career-best second at the Salzburgring driving the team’s March 752-BMW. He crashed at Enna-Pergusa and saw out the season in a Chevron B29-BMW with which he finished fourth at Zolder.

A move to Osella-BMW for 1976 was a struggle so Binder defected to Chevron by mid-season with a BMW-powered B35 chassis. That brought an immediate upturn in form and fourth-place finishes in the final three races of the year.

Formula 1 with Ensign, Williams, Surtees and ATS

Seventh in the European F2 Championship as a result – he also made his Grand Prix debut that year. Binder hired Mo Nunn’s Ensign N176-Ford for that year’s Austrian GP and he drove a Williams FW05-Ford in Japan – retiring on both occasions.

Binder began 1977 driving a Durex Surtees TS19-Ford (finishing ninth in the Spanish GP) but he suffered a knee injury after Monaco and was replaced. He returned in Austria with an ATS Wheels Penske PC4 and finished eighth in Holland. He returned to Surtees for the last three races of the year but crashed in both Canada and Japan.

He was Jochen Mass’ ATS team-mate for the 1978 Austrian GP but neither qualified. It was a suitably underwhelming end to Hans Binder’s Formula 1 career.
