There have been some obscure gentlemen who have appeared during Formula 1 race weekends and Günther Seiffert ranks among them. He raced in the category for two seasons during the early 1960s without ever being quick enough to succeed.
He drove an NSU Prinz in the Nürburgring 500Kms in 1960 and 1961 before switching to F1 in 1962 with Wolfgang Seidel’s two year old Lotus 18-Climax. His debut in the Lavant Cup at Goodwood was ignominious – crashing after three laps when already in danger of being lapped. At least he finished the Aintree 200 (13 laps off the pace) and at Solitude (10th and last).
Grand Prix attempt
Seiffert drove a few laps during qualifying for that year’s German Grand Prix but his best time around the Nürburgring was a minute slower than Seidel and neither qualified – the latter excluded for not completing enough laps. Seiffert finished last in two further outings that year at Enna-Pergusa and Oulton Park.
Nothing if not resilient, he returned in 1963 with a Lotus 24 entered under the Rhein-Ruhr Racing Team moniker. Sadly, he was no quicker. He finished a tardy seventh in the non-championship Austrian GP after a race of attrition and entered the Italian GP but did not arrive.
