Giorgio Mondini

The son of a former driver, Giorgio Mondini put education before his wish to race during his teenage years. With qualifications secured, the 20 year old made his debut in Formula Renault with Jenzer Motorsport during 2001. His raw speed was evident but Mondini often proved impetuous on raceday.

Formula Renault V6 and 3.5

His 2003 move to the Formula Renault V6 Championship with EuroInternational was hampered by a road accident during the Monaco weekend. Seventh that year, he remained with the team to win the 2004 title after winning three times.

Mondini began 2005 in the new F.Renault 3.5 series with EuroInternational but he ended the season in Dave Price’s GP2 team. He also drove in two A1GP meetings for Switzerland but he had loftier ambitions for the following year.

Formula 1 ambitions

Mondini was a reserve for the Midland F1 team and its Friday test driver at nine Grands Prix during 2006 without making an impression. He made selected endurance racing appearances over the coming seasons – including finishing ninth in the 2009 Le Mans 24 Hours with a Team Kolles Audi R10 TDI. Mondini tested an HRT F110-Cosworth in Barcelona’s 2011 pre-season Formula 1 test but did not race that year.
