Gerino Gerini was an Italian Marquis who raced in sports cars and Formula 1 during the 1950s. With a lit cigarette in his hand whenever out of the car, he could afford to race purely for the sport.

Points scorer on Formula 1 debut

His Ferrari 212 retired from the 1953 Mille Miglia before Gerini achieved some national success with a Scuderia Guastalla Ferrari 250 Monza a year later. That included victories in the Giro dell’Umbria and Trofeo Sardo. Gerini’s single-seater career began at the very top when he scored points on his F1 debut.

Maserati took six 250Fs to Buenos Aires for the opening Grand Prix of 1956 and Gerini was nominated as reserve driver. He took over Chico Landi’s car for a time and the pair finished in fourth position – albeit six laps behind. Gerini continued to race that car when once more entered under the Guastalla banner. He was fifth at Syracuse and third in Naples against non-championship fields although 10th in the Italian GP was more representative of his outright pace.

Formula 1 finale

Gerini returned in 1958 after a year away to drive a Scuderia Centro Sud Maserati 250F but the car was no longer competitive. He failed to qualify in Monaco and ninth in France was the best finish from the four races he did start. Sixth in a minor race at Caen, he was 12th in his final GP in Morocco. He did win that year’s Mille Miglia when sharing Luigi Taramazzo’s Ferrari but the event was now a minor regularity test following Alfonso de Portago’s tragic 1957 crash.

Gerini’s final international races were in the 1960 World Sportscar Championship with Scuderia Serenissima’s Ferrari 250GT. He finished 12th on the Targa Florio and crashed on his last such appearance at the Nürburgring.

In later years, Gerino Gerini became Lamborghini’s Milan agent before successfully expanding his car dealerships overseas. He eventually retired to the family’s ancestral home near Florence.
