Freddy Kottulinsky was a contemporary of Ronnie Peterson and Reine Wisell at the start of the golden generation of Swedish racing talent that emerged towards the end of the 1960s.

Family background and early career

Born in Germany to a noble family, he started racing late but enjoyed a long and occasionally controversial career in the sport. Something of a firebrand, he won the 1966 Swedish Formula 3 Championship by beating the likes of Wisell and Picko Troberg despite driving an outdated Lotus 35-Ford. Rather than progress, he remained in the category and was part of the Swedish team (with Peterson and Torsten Palm) that won the 1969 European F3 Cup.

Kottulinsky then tried rallying and his Toyota Corolla was 23rd on the 1973 Swedish Rally a year before he won the European Super Vee Championship with a Lola T320. The highlight of a partial F3 season driving Fritz Lochmann’s Modus M1-BMW in 1975 was victory in the second round of the European Championship on the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife.

Formula 2 and rallying

Lochmann financed his graduation to Formula 2 for the following season but he was already 43 years old. Although Kottulinsky’s Ralt RT1-BMW won the poorly supported non-championship Eifelrennen at the ‘Ring, he was not so competitive when points were on offer. Two seasons in the European F2 Championship yielded a best finish of seventh at Salzburgring in 1976 and Estoril a year later.

He drove a BMW Switzerland 320i in sports cars during 1978 and was fourth at both Silverstone and Vallelunga. Seventh overall in the 1979 Portuguese Rally (his best result in the World Rally Championship), Kottulinsky turned his attention to Rally-Raids in later years. That culminated in victory in the 1980 Paris-Dakar with a Volkswagen Iltis.
