Didier Cottaz is a French Formula 3 Champion who was unable to translate his promise into a sustained professional career.

Formula 3 and F3000

Runner-up in Formula Renault during 1991, he spent the next two seasons in F3 with Formula Project. Eighth in his rookie 1992 campaign, his Dallara F393-Fiat won four times a year later to narrowly beat Guillaume Gomez to the 1993 French F3 Championship. Cottaz graduated to Formua 3000 a year later with Paul Stewart Racing and a Reynard 94D-Judd. He finished sixth on his debut and scored podium finishes at Pau (third) and Spa-Francorchamps (second) to share fifth in the 1994 championship.

But a second season with the team proved a disappointment with the Frenchman crashing too often and only scoring a single point when sixth at Pau. That spelt the end of his single-seater ambitions and Cottaz raced in sports cars from 1996.

Sports car racing

He joined Courage Compétition a year later to finish fourth in the 1997 Le Mans 24 Hours. Cottaz also won a non-championship sports car race at Járama in what was a forerunner to the Sports-Racing World Cup. He continued in endurance events into the new decade before retiring to run Didier Cottaz Management – a corporate events company based in Bourg-en-Bresse.
