Biography

Yorkshireman Dan Clarke started racing cars in 2001 – winning a BRDC Formula Ford Championship before progressing to the senior series. 2004 was the year that he first established himself in the category when driving a Team JLR Van Diemen RF04. Runner-up in the British Formula Ford Championship behind Finland’s Valle Makela, Clarke then won the prestigious end-of-season Festival at Brands Hatch.

Formula 3 race winner

A move to British Formula 3 and Kimi Räikkönen’s Double R Racing in 2005 began with a podium in the opening round and victory at Castle Combe. However, poor qualifying too often hampered his race despite many a spirited drive through the field. Clarke was fifth in the British F3 Championship that year but had ambitious plans for 2006.

Graduation to Champ Cars

Rather than remain in Europe, he moved to America for what proved to be the final two seasons of the once great Champ Car World Series. His 2006 campaign with HVM began with too many accidents and an attitude that hardly enamoured him to his rivals or media alike. He eventually tempered his approach and his promise was shown by a third-place finish at Denver, lucky pole position at Elkhart Lake and generally outperforming team-mate Nelson Philippe.

He moved to Minardi Team USA for 2007 and scored a career-best second at Elkhart Lake. That was a rare highlight of a disappointing season and he was unable to find a drive when the championship collapsed early in 2008. He raced in A1GP at the start of 2009 but that series was soon consigned to history as well.

Eager to re-establish himself in America, Clarke joined Walker Racing for the 2010 Indy Lights series and finished second at Toronto and Mid-Ohio. He made his stock car debut in the Watkins Glen Nationwide Series race in 2011 but his Means Racing Chevrolet retired on a one-off appearance.
