Biography

Talent and ambition aplenty, Damien Magee did not have the funding to match and that was the story of this fiery Irishman’s career. The consequent wheeler-dealing and jumping from ride-to-ride culminated in a Formula 1 debut in the 1975 Swedish Grand Prix. That he made it to F1 at all was testament to his tenacity as much as to his skill.

Racing career and Grand Prix start

An aggressive Formula Ford driver early in the decade, he graduated to Formula 3 in 1973. His best result that year was an excellent third in Monaco after his A.W.Brown Racing Brabham BT41-Ford had avoided the accidents that day. Rather than lead to further opportunities, the car was promptly sold and he struggled for his next move.

Magee competed in Formula 5000, Formula Ford 2000 and North American Formula Atlantic as he tried to further his career. With regular drivers Arturo Merzario and Jacques Laffite racing for Alfa Romeo in sports cars, Magee’s Williams FW03-Ford finished 14th in the 1975 Swedish GP on a one-off GP start.

He retired a RAM Racing Brabham BT42-Ford from the 1976 International Trophy at Silverstone but failed to qualify the team’s BT44B when entered in the French GP that summer. A regular in that year’s British ShellSport Group Eight Championship (the replacement for F5000 and forerunner of British F1), his Hexagon Racing March 75A-Ford won rounds two and three to establish a points lead. He survived a big accident at Snetterton and his challenge faded despite switching to an F1 Penske PC3-Ford. Magee finished the year as runner-up behind David Purley but he retired from racing at the end of 1977 after another couple of British G8 starts.
