Alingsas, Vastra Gotaland
Most recent race (in database):

Conny Andersson was a more-than-competent Formula 3 racer for a decade, but is judged by two unsuccessful Formula 1 attempts. The son of a Nödinge garage owner, his first taste of competition was in motocross and he was already in his late-twenties when he considered a motor racing career.

Formula 3 star but F1 footnote

He acquired a Brabham BT21 with which he raced in national F3 events. He twice won the Swedish Championship before racing a Rotel-sponsored March 753-Toyota in the European series. Andersson followed compatriot Ronnie Peterson and so many future F1 stars by winning the 1975 Monaco F3 race on the road only to be penalised for jumping the start.

He did win the European Championship race at Anderstorp that year and Andersson was a title contender again in 1976 but he narrowly lost out to Riccardo Patrese. His was very much a privateer team – the 36-year-old often his own mechanic and truck driver.

Formula 1 with Surtees and Stanley BRM

Impressed by his Monaco performance, Surtees gave Andersson a test before the 1976 F1 season and the Swede made his GP debut in Holland, although his Chesterfield Surtees TS19-Ford retired with engine failure. Desperate to race permanently in F1, Andersson joined BRM for 1977 but that was a mere shadow of a once great team. He was entered in the overweight and underpowered P207 chassis for four GPs that year but failed to qualify.

With F1 ambitions unfulfilled, Andersson returned to Nödinge to work in the family business that he now runs.
