The son of 1920s aviator and national racing driver Domingo Bucci, this introverted Argentinean first raced in Europe during 1948. That was with a Scuderia Milano Maserati 4CL and third at San Remo was Clemar Bucci’s highlight. The campaign was interrupted by an accident during practice for the Swiss Grand Prix and although he returned in the autumn, it would be another six years before Bucci raced in Europe again.

He garnered a growing reputation back in Argentina driving a 4500cc Alfa Romeo before an ill-conceived experiment with a rear-engined Autoar. Some South American speed records were achieved in July 1953 before Bucci returned to Europe once more.

Formula 1 with Gordini and Maserati

He joined Gordini midway through 1954 for another tilt at continental Formula 1. The underfinanced French team was no match for Ferrari or Maserati but Bucci made his championship debut in the British GP at Silverstone where he qualified 13th for the first of four championship races. He was out of luck on each occasion – crashing at Silverstone, his wheel falling off in Germany and thwarted by further mechanical failures in Switzerland and Italy.

His best performance was in the non-championship Pescara GP when he qualified third and ran a distant second before hitting a wall just after half distance. Eager for the finishing money, Bucci limped back to the pits and had completed enough laps to be classified sixth.

The 1955 F1 season opened in Argentina and Bucci was in one of seven works Maserati 250Fs entered. It was a stiflingly hot day and the team’s drivers took turns behind the wheel – Bucci retired once more on his final F1 championship start. He also raced in the Buenos Aires 1000Kms that year but the Ferrari 750 Monza he shared with Umberto Maglioli was disqualified after a push start.

That was Bucci’s first and last race in the World Sportscar Championship and he did not return to international competition again. He owned a collection of classic cars in later life and was a regular visitor to historic meetings until his death in 2011.
