The first President of Scuderia Ferrari and twice a Grand Prix winner, Count Trossi was stylish as a man and as a driver. He had an elegant unhurried style on the track and was forever smoking a pipe off it. Not from the very top drawer, this nobleman was a more than competent journeyman.

Background and early racing career

Born in the ancestral castle at Biella, "Didi" was always blessed with personal wealth. He worked in the family’s business in the wool trade after completing his education at Leeds University in Yorkshire (he was a true Anglophile).

Trossi began competing in hillclimbs during 1931 and joined Scuderia Ferrari for his first race, the 1932 Mille Miglia which he finished in second position with Antonio Brivio. He was fifth on his GP debut at Monaco in 1933 and qualified on pole position for the following year’s race. He also began winning that year, albeit in minor events lacking the sport’s big stars.

He left Ferrari in 1935 after surviving a road accident in Switzerland. He designed and built his own car in the dungeons his castle. The Trossi-Monaco was a radical air-cooled machine but it never raced. He joined Maserati in 1936 and raced in the German GP (sharing with Dick Seaman) and the Vanderbilt Cup in America. It was voiturettes that provided Trossi with success that year – victory at the Nürburgring just one of his five wins.

He won twice more in 1937 and raced for the rest of the decade with little outright success. He was third in the 1940 Tripoli GP however in one of the few races held during World War II. By then, Trossi was serving as a fighter pilot in the Italian Air Force but his greatest racing victories were still ahead.

Post-war success

He joined the all-conquering Alfa Romeo team after the war and won the 1947 Italian GP on the streets around Milan’s fairgrounds when his pacesetting team-mate Jean-Pierre Wimille was absent.

A second GP win followed at Bremgarten a year later but by now Trossi had been diagnosed with cancer. He raced for the last time in the 1948 Monza GP (finishing second behind Wimille). Trossi died in a Milan clinic shortly after his 41st birthday.
