Motor racing was only ever a pastime for this Belgian real estate agent. But he gained a reputation as a more-than-competent sports car driver during the 1960s. He was a mainstay of Belgium’s national teams at Le Mans for a decade and finished sixth on his debut in 1958 with Ecurie Nationale Belge’s yellow Ferrari 250TR.

Success at Le Mans

Third in 1959 and 1962 when sharing ENB’s Ferrari with “Eldé” on both occasions, he won the 3-litre GT class for the next three years – finishing second (1963), fifth (1964) and third (1965) overall in the process. “Beurlys” was third again in 1967 and remained an occasional starter during the 1970s. His final appearance in the Le Mans 24 Hours was in 1979.

“Beurlys” owned an impressive collection of classic racing cars which he displayed in a private museum in Belgium.
