Biography

Although born close to the Swiss border, Bernard Collomb was a garage owner in Nice by the time he raced motorcycles in the 1950s. He was an occasional Formula 1 privateer a decade later who never threatened to be anything other than an enthusiastic backmarker.

Collomb bought a Formula 2 Cooper T45-Climax with which he started his car racing career in 1960. Fifth in minor races at Snetterton and Montlhéry were his best results but he was nothing if not ambitious.

Formula 1 privateer

A new Cooper T53 was acquired for the following season and Collomb graduated to F1. Fourth and last in the non-championship 1961 Preis von Wien, he did not finish either the French or German Grands Prix. He then destroyed the car in a fiery practice crash before the following spring’s race in Brussels.

He returned at Solitude with an ex-Reg Parnell chassis – retiring that day and again from the German GP, his one championship race of the year. Collomb bought a Lotus 24-Climax for 1963 but he was, if anything, less competitive. Failure to qualify at Monaco was followed by his final GP start and the only finish of his F1 career when 10th in Germany. Another DNQ at Monaco in 1964 ended his championship aspirations and the car was ruined by another fire as he returned from Syracuse in April 1965.

So Collomb invested in an F2 Lotus 35-Cosworth but any hope of more competitive showings at a lower level proved ill-founded. The Frenchman ran at the back on the days he managed to qualify in 1965. His lingering pretensions in single-seaters ended when he destroyed the Lotus during the 1966 Montjuich Park F2 race – Collomb switching to the less-rarefied climbs of GT racing.
