Formula 1 has always had its professionals and its amateurs – gentlemen drivers who use wealth and privilege to race at the highest level. The son of a wealthy Catalan surgeon, Alejandro Soler-Roig was from the latter group.

Early racing career

He took up racing in 1960 when already in his late-twenties and he soon won his first hillclimb. It was eight years before Soler-Roig competed outside Spain when driving a Formula 2 Lola T100-Ford and making his Le Mans debut with a Porsche 907/8 during 1968. Often a retiree that season, the Escuderia Nacional Porsche 907 he shared with Rudi Lins finished fourth in the 1969 Sebring 12 Hours.

His father had treated Jochen Rindt after the Austrian’s 1969 Spanish GP accident and Rindt joined Soler-Roig Jr at the start of 1970 to finish second in the non-championship Buenos Aires 1000Kms with an Escuderia Nacional Porsche 908. Soler-Roig dominated that year’s Spanish Sportscar Championship but had grander plans. He entered three Grands Prix during 1970 with a semi-works Lotus-Ford only to fail to qualify on each occasion.

Formula 1 with March and BRM

Soler-Roig joined the works March team in 1971 and qualified for four of the opening five world championship rounds. However, convinced that his engines were not on a par with those of his team-mates, he quit the team after the French GP. He returned to F1 with a works BRM P160B for two GPs in 1972 but was out of his depth at the highest level.

He enjoyed more success in touring cars – twice Spanish Champion and a race winner in the European Touring Car Championship with a Ford Germany Capri. Soler-Roig retired from racing at the end of 1972 and later owned a garage and transport business.
