The son of a wealthy sometime amateur driver, Alberto Rodríguez Larreta began racing in 1953 when competing in national sports cars and the city-to-city races that were still popular in his homeland. Buenos Aires first hosted the World Sportscar Championship in 1954 and Larreta entered a Porsche 550 with Jorge Chaves. They were still running at the finish but were unclassified.
Formula 1 with Lotus
He retired from the 1955, 1956 and 1958 Buenos Aires 1000Kms before joining Team Lotus for the 1960 Temporada season. Driving an outdated front-engine Lotus 16-Climax, "Larry" qualified 15th for the Argentine Grand Prix and ran in the midfield throughout to finish ninth on his only Formula 1 start.
The following week’s Buenos Aires City GP – a non-championship Formule Libre event at Córdoba – was less successful however. He was unable to start after clipping a curb during practice and suffering persistent ignition problems. There was talk of a works Lotus contract but it never materialised.
Larreta continued to race in Argentina and won a 500 mile race at Buenos Aires in 1962 with a Jaguar. He competed in national Formula Junior two years later and made one sortie to Europe in 1969 when fourth in an 84-hour marathon at the Nürburgring.
He continued racing in the Turismo Carretera until 1971 and twice won his class before concentrating on business. But he suffered a heart attack and died in 1977 when still only 43 years old.
