This Welshman was a consistent Formula 2 driver who later helped found two different F1 teams once he concentrated solely on management.

Early racing career

Alan Rees began racing a Lotus 11 sports car in 1959 while still at Swansea University. He won at Brands Hatch on Boxing Day and used backing from his father’s haulage firm to finance a switch to Formula Junior. Rees was a works Lotus driver in the category in 1962 and his Lotus 23-Ford finished second on his international sports car debut in that year’s Auvergne Trophy at Clermont-Ferrand.

He joined Roy Winkelmann’s FJ team in 1963 and both graduated together to the new Formula 2 a year later with Rees driving a Brabham BT10 as well as running the team. He won his fourth race in the category at Reims by beating a field that included five past or future world champions and he was third in the French F2 Championship.

Grand Prix debut

Jochen Rindt joined the team in 1965 and would become the acknowledged master of the formula. Rees beat him at Enna-Pergusa but raced mostly in his shadow. Three F2 podium finishes (at Crystal Palace, Reims and Rouen) as well as Le Mans and Grand Prix debuts marked a busy 1966. He retired a works Matra M620 from what was his only 24-hour race and he also failed to finish the German GP as well – Rees having driven Winkelmann’s Brabham BT18-Cosworth in the F2 class.

Fifth in the new European F2 Championship and Autocar British Champion in 1967, he was ninth in the British GP with a Cooper T81-Maserati and second in the F2 class of the German GP. That was Rees’ third and final GP start.

Team management

Rees retired from driving at the end of 1968 to concentrate on team management. He was the “R” in March when it was formed in conjunction with Max Mosley, Graham Coaker and Robin Herd. He moved to Shadow in 1978 but left with Jackie Oliver to form Arrows in 1978 (again he was the “R” in an acronym). He remained with the team until selling it to Tom Walkinshaw in 1996.
