First seen behind the wheel of a Renault Eight Gordini in national rallies and races during 1967, Alain Cudini switched to French Formula Renault in 1971 with a Martini and finished fourth. He switched to an Alpine-Renault for his second season in the category in 1972. That included victory in the inaugural European Championship and finishing as runner-up in France.

Formula 3 followed without much joy and Cudini made three Formula 2 starts during 1974 – his Elf Alpine A367-BMW coming sixth at Karlskoga.

Touring cars

It was 1977 before Cudini concentrated on the discipline for which he is best known – touring cars. He competed in both the European and French Championships and was second in the latter in 1981. Beaten by Jean-Pierre Malcher that year, he won the French Supertourisme title two years later driving Dany Snobeck’s Alfa Romeo GTV6.

The highlight of his ETCC career came in the 1984 Vallelunga race when he and Snobeck combined to score a dramatic victory. Their Bastos/Juma BMW 635CSi only qualified 19th but Cudini fought his way through the field and survived heavy contact with René Hollinger’s similar car that landed his rival on its roof. His own car was six inches or so lower as a consequence but Cudini took the lead with 12 laps to go to win. He switched to DTM in 1988 and finished fifth with a Mercedes-Benz 190E.

24-hour success

Cudini also made his first Le Mans start for six years in 1989 when sharing the fifth-placed Sauber C9-Mercedes with Jean-Louis Schlesser and Jean-Pierre Jabouille – his best result in 13 attempts in the race. Continued saloon car campaigns in France and Belgium included victory in the 1998 Spa 24 Hours with a BMW 320i, Eric van de Poele and Marc Duez.
