Although Zeltweg held Austria’s first World Championship Grand Prix in 1964, the event proved unpopular and was not repeated there. The course was a dull, bumpy temporary circuit on an army airfield, with a concrete surface that caused a high rate of attrition. Lorenzo Bandini survived to record his only victory. The Austrian GP switched to sports cars before the new Osterreichring was built to replace Zeltweg in 1969.
