Shah Alam

Shah Alam, Selangor

This circuit was originally known as Batu Tiga and is sometimes referred to as Selangor in deference to the palace that overlooks it. Shah Alam held the Selangor 800 sports car race in 1985, the only World Championship car race in Malaysia before Sepang opened some 14 years later. Run at the start of the monsoon season, only 3,000 spectators paid to watch so the exercise was not repeated. The circuit was closed in 1977 after an accident claimed the lives of six children. It reopened after a £100,000 refit with better protection for spectators and held the Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix during the 1990s. It closed in 2003 and has since been redeveloped as housing.
