Set in the desert near the San Bernardino Mountains, Riverside succumbed to the urban sprawl of Los Angeles and closed in 1989. It held the first United States Grand Prix – a sports car race in 1958 – and Stirling Moss won a full World Championship Grand Prix two years later in Rob Walker’s Lotus 18. The three layouts were all challenging, the uphill esses in particular. Dan Gurney excelled here, winning the early-season NASCAR race five times and the Champ Car event twice. A shopping mall and residential housing now stand on what was Riverside International Raceway.
