Set in the desert near the San Bernardino Mountains, Riverside succumbed to the urban sprawl of Los Angeles and closed in 1989. It held the first United States Grand Prix – a sports car race in 1958 – and hosted a full World Championship Grand Prix two years later. The three layouts were all challenging, the uphill esses in particular. Dan Gurney excelled here, winning the early-season NASCAR race five times and the Champ Car event twice. A shopping mall and residential housing now stand on what was Riverside International Raceway.
