Austria hosted the 1964 Winter Olympic Games in the Tyrol.

Austria hosted the 1964 Winter Olympic Games in the Tyrol. All Alpine Ski events except the men’s downhill were held at Axamer Lizum to the southwest of Innsbruck. A new access road was opened for the games, and this was used for the Olympia Bergrennen. Michel Weber’s Porsche 904GTS won the 1965 hillclimb with Sir John Whitmore’s Ford Lotus Cortina fourth overall. Whitmore’s time of 8min 11.1 won the saloon car class – a round of that year’s European Touring Car Championship.
