The North Carolina Motor Speedway held NASCAR Cup races every year from opening in 1965 until Matt Kenseth won the final such event in 2004. As other circuits were modernised in recent years, “The Rock” remained relatively unchanged and NASCAR’s lesser categories are now the main attraction. The uneven configuration of the turns (which are banked 22 degrees and 25 degrees) made good car set-up difficult to achieve and the track was particularly hard on brakes and tyres.
