Nashville Superspeedway was the third concrete oval in the United States when it opened in 2001, joining Bristol and its owner Dover Downs in rejecting the more normal tarmac surface. Buddy Lazier won the first Indy Racing League event held under lights on the D-shaped 14 degree banked oval. These floodlights incorporate mirrors to reduce glare and simulate daylight during a night race. The championship visited until 2008 but the facility all-but closed after the 2011 season. Available as a testing venue only after that date, it was subject of ultimately fruitless takeover negotiations during 2014.
