Aspern

Racing was first held on this bumpy and abrasive airfield circuit to the east of Vienna in 1956 with a mix of motorcycles, touring cars, and single seaters. Stirling Moss stopped off on the way to Syracuse in 1961 to easily win a non-championship race with Rob Walker’s Lotus 18-Climax. It held a round of the European Touring Car Championship from 1966-69 before racing ceased. The airfield closed in 1977 when a second runway was built at Vienna’s main airport as it was too close for air traffic control. Historic race meetings were held at Aspern in 2007, ’08 and ’09 before it was redeveloped.
